Sassy, irreverant Aggie Stockdale should have gotten the lead in her high school's production of Hello Dolly! It's her dream role; she's had the part memorized since she was ten; and she and Roger Morton, who's playing the male lead, definitely had chemistry in the audition. But Aggie isn't just a talented actress, writer, and athlete. She's also the fattest girl in the senior class.

What happens after she checks the cast list for the musical will hurl Aggie into an unexpected journey of tears, friendship, jealousy, revenge, Oreos, and lots and lots of theatre. She'll discover hidden talents and new friends; she'll survive a daunting audition and revel in a thrilling opening night; she'll search for love, inspiration, help with her math homework, and the perfect closing number; and her emotional ride won't be over 'til the fat lady sings.

The Fat Lady Sings edition by Charlie Lovett Children eBooks

Let's be honest --I stumbled on this book because I L-O-V-E-D The Bookman's Tale and wanted to see what else the author had done. This isn't as good as The Bookman's Tale, but I couldn't put it down, either: I could hear at least one of my students narrating this book. It's a little bit "Ferris Bueller" -- and we've all taught someone like Ferris -- but from a female point of view. I laughed, I got teary-eyed, I nodded my head in agreement. Is it a little far-fetched? Yep. Is it typical high school drama? Oh yes! Do the "good guys" win in the end? Of, course. Is it worth your time and money? Absolutely. If you teach school, and like doing it, and love the kids in front of you each year -- you'll find yourself "re-naming" each of the characters in the book with the names of kids who have been in your rollbook. You can get through this in a couple of days, and you will have a good time doing it.

The Fat Lady Sings edition by Charlie Lovett Children eBooks Reviews

Charlie Lovett captures youth in a realistic, interesting, provocative way. He addresses the complexities of growing up in today's world through believable characters who form relationships that are sometimes predictable and often not. The story line will interest youth and adults, particularly those who have experienced the magic of theatre. Charlie creates male and female characters in an equally appealing manner. I would have enjoyed conversations with many characters in the book. Relationships between youth and adults are treated fairly, even when there might be cause for angst. I worked with young people for many years and know that parts of many of them are represented in characters in the book. If you have ever been a teenager, or know one, this book is for you.
I loved this book! The story is hilarious and heartfelt, without ever stooping to sentimentality. Fans of "Glee," "Wicked," and "Hairspray" will flip for this sharp, sassy, and utterly believable story of a talented plus-size teen in a standard-size theatre world. Aggie and all the other characters are rendered with a clear, unflinching eye (Aggie's no angel), and a lot of humanity as well. If you've done theatre at any point in your life, or if you've ever wanted to get onstage and perform, you'll identify with Aggie's passion, and you'll recognize her challenges, as well. Best of all, you'll cheer at her triumphs. I predict this book will be a major hit. This would make a fantastic gift for the theatre-loving teen on your shopping list.
I believe the lead words to this review just about sum it up in a nutshell. Ok, it was very simplistic, mindless reading.
Fun book. For younger readers. It is a high school story.
I picked this book up to read on a long flight because the premise seemed intriguing. Though I don't really fit the target demographic, I was able to relate to the characters very well. Charlie Lovett does a great job of immersing the reader in the unique atmosphere of high school theater. Any current or former "theater geek" would enjoy "The Fat Lady Sings". Moreover, I'd be interested in a screen adaptation.

I look forward to reading other titles by this author. In fact, it would be interesting follow Aggie Stockdale and her friends as they begin their college experience. What say you, Mr. Lovett?
This should be required reading, first in late middle school, then again in high school. And for the kids who don't like to read, it should be read to them, or at least supplied as an audio CD. The book is not only a page-turner, is not only really, really well written, but also has a fabulous, universal human message. I loved it!
You know, I don't know how I happened upon this book--probably some kind of amorphous "you like, here read" auto-response type thing. Must say, the writing and the dialogue--the dialogue!--is absolutely wonderful! I had no idea this was a made-for-teen work, aka "Young Adult Fiction". The writing is sharp, first person, delightful, and inspiring for anyone who has been, or forever shall be, tubby, i.e. fat. Kudos to the author as this would make a really sharp made-for-television movie--it's written that well. As a child, I devoured books whole, and was one-of-the-weirdos who would pick out a favorite book to read at a certain time of day or place--does this make sense? This book, is one of those that I would certain re-read again, in a light-hearted moment, when I needed a feel-good and happy place to go. This would be a go-to for me when I might need an uplifting moment; something positive, something fun, something happy--that's frickin' well written. Side note after reading this, purchased another book from the same author. Not bad in the whole historical novel sense, but boy, did I miss the in-your-face contemporary dialogue.
